Health Canada has granted approval to Subtle Medical’s magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhancement software, SubtleHD.

This approval marks the expansion of the software’s availability to healthcare providers throughout the country.

SubtleHD claims to decrease the scan period, enhance image quality, and increase patient throughput.

The software is said to improve diagnostic confidence, even on older machines, through sharpening and denoising techniques applicable across various body parts, contrasts, and sequences.

Healthcare facilities in Canada can now benefit from the software’s ability to facilitate up to 80% shorter MRI sequences.

This reduction not only helps alleviate the discomfort of an individual but also eliminates the need for a re-scan, expediting the diagnosis.

Subtle Medical’s software also claims to aid facilities in increasing the daily scan volume and adding extra slot times, and minimise backlogs.

SubtleHD’s vendor-neutral nature allows for integration into current MRI infrastructure without the need for upgrades or replacements to the scanner.

The software is a component of the MRI enhancement package, Subtle-ELITE, which also includes SubtleALIGN and SubtleSYNTH, both of which are pending approval.

The software is available commercially in the Canadian market as a standalone solution.

Once approved, these products will be available as an integrated AI package for providers.

Subtle Medical noted that SubtleHD extends the lifespan of current magnets and removes the requirement of expensive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) upgrades or new equipment buys.

By increasing the number of slot times per machine and improving scheduling efficiency, the company claims that the software will enhance revenue for healthcare facilities.

Subtle Medical’s chief commercial officer Josh Gurewitz said: “Health Canada’s clearance of SubtleHD is a vital milestone for improving the accessibility and quality of MRI across the country.

“With this approval, healthcare providers in Canada can immediately begin using our AI to expand imaging capacity, reduce burnout, and deliver faster diagnoses for patients – without needing to buy a new scanner.”
