Johnson & Johnson (J&J) MedTech has launched the Soundstar Crystal ultrasound catheter in the US, intended for intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) imaging for cardiac ablation procedures.

The integration of this catheter with the CARTO 3 mapping system, including the AI-powered CARTOSOUND FAM module, claims to offer an efficient workflow for electrophysiologists.

The module鈥檚 AI algorithm automatically generates the left atrial anatomy, leveraging images gathered from a rotation of the ultrasound catheter in the right atrium.

According to the company, ICE is widely utilised in catheter ablation procedures for high-resolution visualisation of the heart, real-time monitoring of catheter-tissue contact and ablation, and the early detection of procedural complications.

If the real-time imaging is integrated with a 3D electroanatomical mapping system such as the CARTO 3 System, ICE can assist in reconstructing cardiac anatomy and enable zero-fluoroscopy procedures.

The addition of the latest ultrasound catheter follows J&J MedTech’s recent introduction of the Nuvision catheter, which provides 4D imaging for cardiac procedures.

Featuring an 88-element phased linear array, the Soundstar Crystal claims to deliver detailed visualisation and image quality of the heart’s intricate anatomical structures.

It is tailored to balance flexibility and stiffness while ensuring manoeuvrability during ablation procedures.

J&J MedTech electrophysiology president Jasmina Brooks said: 鈥淲e are proud to advance our legacy in integrated ultrasound catheters with this latest innovation that equips electrophysiologists with the tools they need to promote patient safety聽and drive effective聽results.

鈥淭he superior image quality, improved catheter manoeuvrability and stability of the Soundstar Crystal ultrasound catheter, along with seamless CARTO 3 System integration,聽can help enable a zero fluoroscopy workflow, enhancing procedure effectiveness and safety for both healthcare professionals and patients they treat.鈥

Earlier this year, the company鈥檚 Dual Energy Thermocool SmartTouch SF catheter received European CE mark approval to treat cardiac arrhythmias.
